Lightapalooza Conference Keynote

The Luminous Home: Unlocking the Full Potential of Residential Lighting

Presented by: Kevin Houser, PhD, PE (NE), FIES, LC, LEED AP

Professor, School of Civil & Construction Engineering, Oregon State University

Chief Engineer, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory

Co-Founder and CEO, Lyralux Inc.

Tuesday - 1pm-2pm

Presentation Abstract

Join us to explore the profound impact of lighting on human perception, health, and vision within residential environments. This inspirational talk delves into the four key variables of lighting—intensity, spectrum, spatial distribution, and temporal distribution—and how they can be artfully manipulated to create desired psychological impressions and support physiological well-being. From the interplay of ambient luminescence, focal glow, and brilliant accents to the nuanced art of color rendering, we'll uncover how thoughtful lighting design can transform living spaces. The presentation will also highlight the role of lighting in circadian health, emphasizing how a well-designed "photic diet" contributes to overall well-being. Join us to discover how mastering the art and science of residential lighting can elevate the human experience within the home.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this keynote presentation, attendees will be able to:

  1. Recognize the four primary variables of lighting design and their potential to shape human perception and behavior in residential spaces.
  2. Discuss layered lighting techniques as methods to create diverse atmospheric effects, enhance color rendering, and support both functional and emotional needs within a home environment.
  3. Summarize lighting strategies that promote circadian health and overall well-being by optimizing the temporal, intensity, and spectral distribution of light throughout the day.
